The United States has launched limited military strikes against targets on Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, with US officials describing the operation as a defensive response to alleged threats against American assets.

According to a US official speaking anonymously, the strikes were restricted in scope and did not signal a return to large-scale military operations.

A second official said the action was intended to counter Iranian forces allegedly deploying surface-to-air missiles against US assets.

The reported strikes came after Iranian state news agency IRNA announced that several explosions had been heard on Qeshm Island earlier on Monday. The Wall Street Journal had also reported the US military action.

Meanwhile, Fox News, quoting government officials, reported that the strikes followed an alleged Iranian attack on a US aircraft.

Qeshm Island, located in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, occupies a sensitive position in one of the world’s most important maritime corridors. Any military confrontation in the area carries wider implications for regional security and international shipping.

While Washington has presented the operation as a limited defensive action, the latest development could further intensify the already strained relationship between the United States and Iran.

Further details about the targets, the extent of the damage and any possible casualties were not immediately available.
