Bannu, February 21: A lieutenant colonel and a sepoy were martyred on Saturday in a suicide attack during an intelligence-based operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bannu district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The attack targeted a security convoy and was carried out by a vehicle-borne suicide bomber linked to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, referred to by the military as Fitna al Khawarij. Five terrorists were killed in the operation.

The martyred soldiers were 43-year-old Lt Colonel Shahzada Gul Faraz from Mansehra and 28-year-old Sepoy Karamat Shah from Peshawar.

ISPR accused terrorists of using Afghan soil to launch attacks and reaffirmed that counter-terrorism operations under the Azm-i-Istehkam vision will continue.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, expressing grief over the martyrdoms and pledging to pursue the perpetrators.
