Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has barred the United States from using Spanish military bases for any military operations targeting Iran, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The decision reportedly follows recent US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and Tehran’s subsequent retaliation against American interests in the Gulf region.
According to government sources, Madrid has made it clear that Spanish territory cannot be used to support offensive operations that could further inflame the conflict. The move underscores Spain’s position that diplomatic channels must be prioritised to prevent a wider regional war.
The reported restriction affects key joint US-Spanish military facilities, which have historically been used for logistical and strategic support. The decision signals a significant political message within NATO, reflecting growing European caution over direct involvement in the expanding confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
The development comes at a time of heightened global anxiety over energy security, regional stability, and the potential for broader international escalation.
