The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) criticised the federal government on Monday for increasing petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices just ahead of Ramazan, calling the move “unjust” and “highly unfair.”

PPP central spokesperson Shazia Marri said the government’s decision to raise petrol by Rs5 per litre and HSD by Rs7.32 per litre overnight on Sunday amounts to a “petrol bomb” on citizens already facing high inflation. The new ex-depot prices are Rs258.17 per litre for petrol and Rs275.70 per litre for HSD, with the government stating the rates will remain until the end of February due to fluctuations in international oil markets.

Marri argued that the timing of the increase, so close to Ramazan, is unwise and unfair, especially for the poor, labourers, and the middle class. She warned that the hike would push up transportation and food costs, aggravating economic hardship.

The PPP lawmaker also highlighted a contradiction in government policy, noting that while authorities announce Ramazan relief packages, they simultaneously raise fuel prices, which undermines public relief efforts. She urged the government to focus on tackling inflation, unemployment, and the broader economic crisis instead of adding financial burdens.

Marri demanded an immediate review and withdrawal of the price increase, calling for measures that provide genuine relief to the people.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon echoed these concerns, stating that the hike would further strain the budgets of ordinary citizens and urging the federal government to reconsider and prioritise meaningful economic support ahead of Ramazan.
