Abbas Araghchi has accused the United States of spreading “fake news” regarding activity in the Strait of Hormuz in an attempt to influence global financial markets.

In a message posted on X (Twitter), the Iranian foreign minister said US officials were circulating misleading claims after Washington walked back an earlier statement that one of its warships had escorted an energy tanker through the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the day.

“US officials are posting fake news to manipulate markets. It won’t protect them from the inflationary tsunami they’ve imposed on Americans,” Araghchi wrote.

He also warned that global energy markets were facing what he described as the largest supply shortfall in history, saying it could exceed the impact of past crises such as the Arab Oil Embargo, the Iranian Revolution, and Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait combined.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital route for global oil shipments, and tensions in the area frequently trigger volatility in international energy and financial markets.
