Washington, March 9, 2026: The US military has launched its strategic E-6B Mercury “Doomsday planes” as tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate, raising concerns of a potential nuclear conflict.
These specialized aircraft serve as airborne command centers for the President and Secretary of Defense, capable of communicating with satellites, land-based military posts, underground missile facilities, and even nuclear-armed submarines deep underwater. In a crisis, they can coordinate a nuclear strike if the United States comes under attack.
Flight-tracking data shows two E-6B flights over the US on March 2—one from the Gulf Coast landing at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland and another from Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Since then, additional launches have reportedly been directed across the Atlantic toward the Persian Gulf.
The planes, built on Boeing 707 frames, can remain airborne for nearly three days with mid-air refueling, reach altitudes of 40,000 feet, and carry a crew of 22. Each aircraft costs approximately $141.7 million.
The E-6B Mercury fleet continues to be the most survivable platform for coordinating America’s military response in extreme scenarios, including World War III. The Pentagon declined to comment on these flights, citing operational security.
The deployment comes as US and Israeli strikes on Tehran have intensified, and allies of Iran, including Russia and China, warn of further escalation. The presence of these planes highlights Washington’s focus on maintaining secure communication channels and strategic readiness in a volatile region.
