Israeli intelligence agencies reportedly spent years infiltrating Tehran’s traffic camera network and other digital systems to monitor the movements of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, ahead of the operation that led to his assassination.
According to reports citing current and former officials, Israeli operatives gained access to large portions of the capital’s surveillance infrastructure, allowing analysts to track vehicle movements, security patrol patterns and locations frequented by the supreme leader and his inner circle.
The surveillance effort is said to have provided detailed “pattern of life” intelligence, including the routines of Khamenei’s bodyguards, the routes used by his convoy and security arrangements around key compounds in Tehran. Analysts reportedly used the data to predict movements with precision.
In addition to hacking traffic cameras, the operation is believed to have included penetration of mobile phone networks and the use of advanced data analysis tools to map communications and security coordination.
Sources quoted in international media described the intelligence campaign as long-term and highly sophisticated, forming the backbone of planning that ultimately enabled the strike.
Iranian officials have not publicly detailed the extent of any cyber breach, but the reports suggest the operation reflected a sustained covert cyber and surveillance effort in the years leading up to the assassination.
