António Guterres has voiced serious concern over the rapidly escalating conflict in the Middle East during a telephone conversation with Abbas Araghchi.
According to a statement from the United Nations, the two leaders discussed the intensifying military situation across the region. Guterres called on all parties involved in the conflict to strictly adhere to international law and avoid targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure.
The UN chief also warned about the wider consequences of the conflict, expressing deep concern over its potential spillover across the region and the growing strain on the global economy.
The crisis has intensified after Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel and several Gulf states in response to earlier strikes by United States and Israel. The ongoing exchange has already disrupted international air travel, rattled financial markets, and pushed global oil prices sharply higher.
Diplomatic observers warn that without urgent de-escalation efforts, the conflict risks widening further and causing significant economic and humanitarian consequences worldwide.
