Karachi, February 21, 2026: The Provincial Assembly of Sindh today unanimously passed a historic resolution condemning any attempt to divide Sindh or create a separate province comprising Karachi. The resolution declares in no uncertain terms that Karachi is, and shall forever remain, an integral and inseparable part of Sindh.

The resolution, presented and endorsed under the leadership of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, highlights Sindh’s rich historical, cultural, and civilizational heritage. Sindh is recognized as one of the world’s oldest living civilizations, home to the Indus Valley Civilization and luminaries such as Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Sachal Sarmast, Abdullah Shah Ghazi, and Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. Over centuries, the province has endured invasions and colonial rule, yet its territorial and cultural unity has remained intact.

Karachi, historically known as Kolachi, emerged from the soil of Sindh to become the province’s principal port, commercial hub, and gateway to the world. Despite serving as Pakistan’s first capital after independence in 1947, the city has always remained geographically, historically, and emotionally inseparable from Sindh. The resolution emphasizes that any attempt to detach Karachi from Sindh would contradict history, constitutional provisions, and the deeply held sentiments of the people of the province.

The document also traces Sindh’s political journey, from its separation from the Bombay Presidency in 1936 to its restoration after the One Unit scheme in 1970, highlighting the province’s long-standing commitment to federalism and democracy. It recalls the Sindh Legislative Assembly’s historic role in the Pakistan Movement, including passing the Pakistan Resolution in 1943, which underlined Sindh’s foundational contribution to the creation of Pakistan.

Among the key points, the resolution:

  • Unequivocally condemns and rejects any conspiracy aimed at dividing Sindh or creating a separate Karachi province.
  • Reaffirms that Sindh’s unity, territorial integrity, and historic identity are sacred trusts to be defended through constitutional and democratic means.
  • Calls upon all political stakeholders to refrain from divisive rhetoric or actions that threaten provincial harmony and national cohesion.
  • Directs the provincial government to transmit a copy of the resolution to the President, Prime Minister, Chairman of the Senate, and Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan for official record.

Murad Ali Shah said that the resolution reflects the collective resolve of Sindh’s people and their elected representatives to safeguard the province’s integrity, dignity, and unbroken legacy.

By passing this resolution unanimously, the Sindh Assembly has sent a clear message that the province’s unity is non-negotiable, and any attempts to divide it will be firmly resisted.
