Munich/Islamabad, February 15, 2026: Pakistan’s Chief of Defense Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, is in Germany for important meetings. He met there US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and discussed regional security and counterterrorism cooperation, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Field Marshal Munir attended the 62nd Munich Security Conference held from February 12 to 14 in Munich. The annual conference is regarded as the world’s leading forum on international security policy and brings together ministers, military leaders, policymakers, academics and representatives from global organizations.

During the visit, Munir met Secretary Rubio and discussed matters of mutual interest, including global and regional security dynamics as well as cooperation in counterterrorism efforts. The meeting comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between Islamabad and Washington aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

Pakistan recently joined a global peace initiative formed under US President Donald Trump to promote international conflict resolution, particularly in Gaza. Islamabad has also credited Washington for helping de-escalate tensions between Pakistan and India last year through diplomatic intervention.

Since mid-2025, Pakistan and the United States have expanded diplomatic contacts, including high-level meetings between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, military leadership and US officials. Discussions have covered trade, minerals, security cooperation and regional stability.

In July 2025, both countries reached a bilateral trade agreement featuring reciprocal tariff reductions and frameworks for US investment in Pakistan’s energy and mineral sectors. Pakistani officials described the agreement as a significant step toward enhanced economic collaboration.

On the sidelines of the Munich conference, Field Marshal Munir also met several senior international officials, including Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, Foreign and Security Policy Adviser Günter Sautter, and General Carsten Breuer, Chief of Defense of the German Armed Forces. Talks focused on contemporary security challenges, bilateral defense cooperation and the importance of dialogue for global peace.

He also held meetings with Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, Chief of Joint Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces, and General Rodolph Haykal, Commander of the Armed Forces of Lebanon. Discussions centered on regional security developments and expanding bilateral defense collaboration.
