An oil tanker sailing under the Palau flag was attacked late Sunday approximately five nautical miles off the coast of Oman’s Musandam peninsula, according to a statement issued by Oman’s Maritime Security Centre. The vessel, identified as the tanker Skylight, was reportedly targeted while navigating waters near the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.
Officials confirmed that four individuals sustained injuries during the incident. As a precautionary measure, the entire crew of 20 onboard the vessel was safely evacuated. Authorities have not yet disclosed the severity of the injuries or provided details regarding the condition of the ship following the attack.
The Maritime Security Centre stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the nature and source of the attack. No group has claimed responsibility so far, and further information is expected once assessments are completed. Security agencies are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with regional maritime authorities.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region. Earlier, Oman’s state media reported that two drones targeted the port of Duqm, a key industrial and logistics hub on the Arabian Sea coast. The drone strike reportedly injured one foreign worker, though no extensive damage was immediately reported.
These back-to-back security incidents have raised concerns about maritime safety in Omani waters, particularly near critical shipping routes that serve as vital arteries for global energy supplies. The Strait of Hormuz, located near Musandam, handles a significant percentage of the world’s oil exports, making any disruption in the area a matter of international concern.
Omani authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of maritime navigation and critical infrastructure. Further updates are expected as investigations progress and more details become available.
