Tehran: Iran’s oil facilities were targeted for the first time since the start of the war as Israeli air strikes hit several key energy sites in and around Tehran while the conflict with the United States and Israel entered its ninth day.
According to Iranian media reports, the strikes triggered large fires after four oil storage facilities and an oil production transfer centre were hit in Tehran and the nearby province of Alborz. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising over the capital following the attacks.
The facilities targeted included the Aghdasieh oil warehouse in northeast Tehran, the Tehran refinery in the south of the city, the Shahran oil depot in western Tehran, and another oil depot located in Karaj city.
Iran’s Fars news agency reported that at least four tanker drivers were killed in the attacks in Tehran and Alborz. Witnesses also said oil from the Shahran depot leaked into nearby streets after the strike.
Despite the attacks, Iranian authorities said there is currently no shortage in fuel distribution and emergency teams along with security forces are engaged in firefighting operations.
Israel said its forces struck several fuel storage facilities in Tehran that it claimed were being used to support military infrastructure.
The conflict between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other has now entered its ninth day. Reports indicate that more than 1,300 people have been killed in Iran since the fighting began, while about 300 people have died in Lebanon and around a dozen in Israel.
Analysts say the targeting of oil infrastructure marks a significant escalation in the conflict as it directly affects Iran’s critical energy sector and raises concerns about environmental damage and further economic disruption in the region.
