The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has forecast that Eidul Fitr 1447 AH is likely to be observed on Saturday, March 21, 2026, as the possibility of sighting the Shawwal crescent on March 19 appears low.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Suparco said the new moon of Shawwal is expected to be born on March 19 at 6:23 a.m. At the time of sunset on that day, the moon would be approximately 12 hours and 41 minutes old, with an estimated 28-minute interval between sunset and moonset along Pakistan’s coastal areas.
“Based on these astronomical parameters, the chances of sighting the Shawwal crescent on the evening of March 19, 2026, are low,” the statement said. “Consequently, 1st Shawwal 1447 AH is anticipated to fall on Saturday, March 21, 2026, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramazan.”
Suparco emphasized that the final decision on the sighting of the Shawwal crescent and the official commencement of Eidul Fitr will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. This committee relies on credible witness testimonies and verified observations from across the country to announce the start of Islamic months.
Earlier, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) also indicated that Ramazan is likely to complete 30 days this year, as the Shawwal moon is unlikely to be visible on March 19, the 29th of Ramazan.
The PMD clarified that its prediction is based on precise astronomical calculations, confirming that the new moon of Shawwal 1447 AH cannot be sighted on the evening of March 19.
Muslims across Pakistan are expected to prepare for Eid celebrations on March 21, pending the official announcement by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
