Authorities released a car driver on personal surety Tuesday after a reckless driving incident in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) left a 26-year-old delivery rider dead. The driver, identified as Hasan Banghwar, was not formally charged, officials said.

The accident, captured on viral social media footage, showed delivery rider Farhan Ali standing on his bike near Saba Avenue when a speeding car flipped over and struck him. Ali succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

South DIG Syed Asad Raza told reporters that Banghwar was initially detained at the Sahil police station following treatment for his injuries. “He was released on personal surety with the consent of the deceased’s parents,” Raza said.

Sahil SHO Hikmatullah confirmed that police had asked Ali’s parents to provide statements to lodge a formal FIR. However, the family chose to take the body to Thatta for burial and indicated they would follow up with authorities later.

Both the car and Ali’s motorbike have been seized by police. Investigations remain ongoing, with formal legal proceedings contingent on the family’s decision to pursue the case.

The incident has reignited concerns over road safety in Karachi, particularly regarding reckless driving in high-density residential and commercial areas.
