ISLAMABAD, March 13, 2026:
At least six police officers lost their lives when a powerful explosion struck a police convoy in Pakistan’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday, officials confirmed. The attack occurred in the troubled district of Lakki Marwat, an area that has witnessed repeated militant incidents in recent months.

Authorities said the blast occurred close to a police vehicle during a routine movement of security personnel. Initial reports suggest an improvised explosive device was used, causing severe damage to the vehicle and killing several officers on the spot.

The incident comes at a time when Pakistan has intensified operations against militant networks along the border with Afghanistan. Security officials say militant groups operating near the frontier have stepped up attacks since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021, creating renewed security challenges for Pakistan.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the fallen officers, calling them “heroes who sacrificed their lives to safeguard the nation.” He reiterated the government’s commitment to continue operations against militant elements threatening peace in the region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, expressing condolences to the families of the slain policemen and pledging that the country would not allow terrorism to undermine national stability.

Security forces had conducted a major counter-militancy operation in the same district a day earlier, during which several suspected militants were reportedly killed and others detained.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused authorities in Afghanistan of failing to prevent militant groups from using Afghan territory to plan attacks across the border—an allegation that Kabul denies. Tensions between the two neighboring countries have risen following cross-border operations and retaliatory incidents along their shared frontier.

Officials say investigations into the Lakki Marwat explosion are underway as security forces tighten surveillance in the region to prevent further attacks.
