Italy — The United States men’s ice hockey team captured Olympic gold for the first time in 46 years, defeating Canada 2-1 in an overtime thriller to conclude the 2026 Winter Games.

Jack Hughes scored the decisive goal just 101 seconds into the overtime period, capping a tense match in which US goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck delivered a stunning performance to keep the Canadians at bay.

“This is incredible, I’m still in shock,” Hughes said after the game. “We stuck together and made history for our country.”

The victory marks the first men’s ice hockey Olympic gold for the United States outside of home ice, since the legendary Miracle on Ice at Lake Placid in 1980. Notably, it mirrors the American women’s triumph over Canada in a 2-1 overtime win earlier in the Games, giving the U.S. a historic double in Olympic ice hockey.

Key Moments

The U.S. opened the scoring through a dazzling individual effort by Matt Boldy, who carried the puck from inside his own half, bypassed two defenders, and rounded goaltender Jordan Binnington for a goal. Canada equalized late in the second period with Cale Makar’s strike following a swift Devon Toews pass.

Despite dominating possession—41 shots to the Americans’ 26 in regulation—Canada was unable to capitalize on numerous opportunities. Hellebuyck’s acrobatic saves, including a critical stop against Mitch Marner, frustrated the Canadians, while Nathan MacKinnon missed an open-net chance late in the game.

Overtime followed the new three-on-three Olympic format, the first time implemented in an Olympic gold medal game, requiring both teams to field three skaters plus a goalie. Hughes’ game-winner sealed the historic victory for the U.S.

Off-Ice Drama and Celebration

This tournament featured NHL players for the first time since 2014, adding intensity to the on-ice competition. Political undertones added extra tension, following last year’s USA–Canada matchup amid former President Donald Trump’s trade threats and remarks about Canada. While Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney were absent from Milan, the White House celebrated the win on X with a patriotic graphic of a bald eagle confronting a Canada goose.

FBI Director Kash Patel joined the American locker room celebrations, and the team also received a congratulatory video call from Trump. The U.S. victory also paid tribute to former teammate Johnny Gaudreau, who tragically died in August 2024; players carried his jersey in the post-game celebration.

Canada’s campaign was hindered by the absence of captain Sidney Crosby, who missed the semi-final and final due to a knee injury. The 38-year-old veteran, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, had been a key leader in prior Games.

The men’s gold medal marks the U.S.’s 12th gold of the 2026 Winter Olympics, helping the nation secure second place in the overall medal table, while Canada finished 11th in a disappointing performance.

This triumph solidifies the United States’ return to prominence in men’s Olympic ice hockey, 46 years after their last victory.
